Education Programs
Engaging the next generation of textile historians, wherever they are.
The Interplanetary Pants Museum is committed to public education in the history of legwear and its relationship to human activity beyond Earth. Our programs are designed for learners at every level, from primary school groups to doctoral candidates conducting provenance research.
All programs are available remotely. In-person participation requires either proximity to the museum's location (see Plan Your Visit for details) or arrangements we have not yet made.
School Groups
We offer guided virtual tours of the permanent collection, structured for curriculum integration at primary and secondary levels. Programs include:
- Materials and Meaning (Ages 8–12)
An introduction to textile history through the museum's most accessible collection pieces. Students learn to read a garment for evidence of use, environment, and maker. Includes the Asteroid Belt Gallery and the Founding Collection, excluding the Inexplicable Pair, which is not recommended for this age group's time constraints.
- Beyond Earth: Why What We Wear Matters (Ages 12–17)
Examines how extreme environments shape garment construction and what that reveals about the humans who wore them. Suitable for history, science, and integrated studies curricula. Includes primary source documentation and discussion of the provenance research process.
School group visits: contact education@interplanetarypantsmuseum.com (routes to info@interplanetarypantsmuseum.com). Scheduling requires 3 weeks minimum notice.
Docent Training
The museum trains and certifies volunteer docents on an ongoing basis. Certification requires completion of our 12-session training program covering collection history, provenance research methodology, visitor engagement, and the specific protocols around the Inexplicable Pair (sessions 9 and 10 are dedicated to this).
Certified docents lead virtual tours and respond to public inquiry. In-person docent assignments are limited to staff due to logistical constraints. Docent certification is recognized by three other textile institutions, none of which are as far away as we are.

Our flagship youth program. The Junior Curator Program accepts applications from students aged 14–18 for a six-month remote residency in collection research. Participants are assigned a collection item with an open provenance question and conduct original research under the guidance of a senior curator.
Three Junior Curators per cohort. Two cohorts per year. Past participants have contributed to curatorial notes that remain part of the permanent record. One past participant resolved a provenance question that had been open for four years. She is now a graduate student at a terrestrial university and has been very gracious about it.
Applications open annually in March. No participant has been assigned the Inexplicable Pair. We are not ready for that.
