The Permanent Collection

Over 400 garments. Eight orbital zones. One inexplicable pair.

The permanent collection of the Interplanetary Pants Museum spans the full history of human legwear in space. The collection is organized by provenance zone, with cross-references by construction period, material, and condition.

Selected highlights are presented below. The complete collection catalogue is available in the reading room and, in condensed form, at the gift shop.

Callisto Field Trousers

Accession No. IPM-0047
Plaid trousers in a brass-framed glass case under dramatic museum lighting (IPM-0047) Military-style dress uniform with silver braiding and white gloves displayed in a glass case (IPM-0047)

Wool-synthetic blend, reinforced knee and seat panels, adjustable waist. Jovian survey mission, third rotation. Provenance confirmed via crew manifest and photographic evidence.

Perhaps the most frequently requested piece in the collection. The reinforced knee panels show significant wear consistent with extended surface operations. The original survey crew member donated them upon retirement. She noted, at the donation ceremony, that she had been wearing them when she found what turned out to be the most significant subsurface reading of the mission. We thought this worth recording.

On permanent display, West Gallery. Photography permitted without flash.

Jovian Work Trousers (Attributed)

Accession No. IPM-0112
Weathered blue cargo trousers with multiple pockets in a glass case under spotlights (IPM-0112) Faded olive-green cargo trousers suspended in a glass display case against a dark background (IPM-0112)

Heavy canvas construction, multiple utility pockets, non-standard fastening system. Circa unknown. Acquired during the third unmanned survey of Ganymede; recovered from survey equipment return container alongside items of unrelated provenance.

These trousers present the collection's most persistent provenance question. The construction is consistent with human manufacture, the materials are identifiable, and the sizing falls within normal human parameters. They should not have been in that container. They are here now. The curatorial team has documented everything it knows, which is less than it would like.

East Gallery, Case 14. Extended notes available at the gallery desk.

The Inexplicable Pair

Accession No. IPM-0001 · Founding Collection
Dark worn denim shorts suspended under a single overhead light inside a glass vitrine (IPM-0001) Translucent white lace trousers hanging in a tall glass case with atmospheric haze in a darkened gallery (IPM-0001)

Material: unknown. Origin: unknown. Acquisition: founding collection, circumstances not recorded.

They were here when we arrived. The founding collection documentation references them without explanation. Material analysis has returned results that are, in the words of the laboratory report, "consistent with known textiles but not matching any specific known textile." They fit. We checked. The curatorial notes for this accession are 47 pages. They do not resolve anything.

Founding Gallery, central case. The 47-page curatorial notes are available in the reading room. Photography requires written permission and a satisfactory explanation of why.

Pallas Survey Shorts

Accession No. IPM-0203
Rear view of heavily patched trousers with blue ribbed knee panels and cargo pockets in a warmly lit glass case (IPM-0203) Two pairs of metallic silver cargo shorts with zippered pockets on slim display stands inside a brightly lit glass case (IPM-0203)

Lightweight synthetic, elasticated waist, reflective trim. Main Belt, 2847 Pallas survey operation. Acquired via estate donation.

The inclusion of shorts in a museum primarily focused on trousers has been noted and occasionally debated. The curatorial team's position is that shorts are a subset of legwear, the provenance is impeccable, and the reflective trim is genuinely unusual for this period and zone. They stay.

Asteroid Belt Gallery. Part of the permanent collection.
